Scuba Diving in Barbados
Want to let your inner pirate off the noose? Make port at Barbados. No, you can’t sack towns or raid ships – but there are plenty of treasures to be found in the local waters.
By treasures, we mean wrecks. Welcome to wreck-diving heaven.
There are more than 200 charted wrecks in Barbados’s Carlisle Bay, including the fan favorite “Stavronikita”, a 365-foot Greek freighter that sunk here in 1976. It’s a thrill for advanced divers, who can explore the coral and marine life that have taken up residence there. Another challenging wreck is the Friars Crag, an intentionally sunk vessel that lies near a beautiful reef.
Barbados also offers shallow wrecks for beginning divers, such as the Bajan Queen, C Trek, and Pamir.
On your surface intervals, you can enjoy a nice variety of landlubber activities like fishing, caving, horseback riding, hiking, golf, and the Mount Gay rum tour – arguably the most pirate-savvy adventure of them all.
Barbados Dive Resorts
We recommend two dive resorts in Barbados: Divi Southwinds Beach Resort and Coconut Court Beach Hotel.
Divi Southwinds Beach Resort
This resort is located on Dover Beach, on the south side of the island, just 4 miles from the capital city of Bridgetown, and 6 miles from the airport. Dover Beach is noted for beautiful wide, sandy beaches with easy currents perfect for families. The “Gap” is a cobbled street that runs carefully through the resort, it allows guests easy access to some of the island’s best dining.

The resort offers over 130 spacious suites with full kitchens, along with a long list of amenities. There are beach villas, pool and garden suites, and two bedroom suites. This is your spot for a Caribbean family adventure or a special island holiday
Just a half mile to two miles from the shore of Barbados are the fringes and reefs full of coral, sponges, and plant life. A multitude of species are found on these reefs like the Hawksbill turtle. Fringes and patching reefs are found closer to shore and have smaller coral formations and more abundant plant life then the barrier reefs. These reefs are home to Sea Horses, Frog Fish, Giant Sand Eels and many other marine creatures. As with many locations in the Caribbean, Barbados has several excellent sites for wreck diving. Carlisle Bay has 200 reported wrecks, and the Stavronikita at Folkestone Marine Park, are two of the most popular sites. Hightide Watersports has teamed with Southwinds to accommodate all your diving needs.
In addition, Divi Southwinds Beach Resort has multiple pools, mini-golf course, beauty salon, fitness room, internet access, two restaurants, and even a mini-market. There’s no place in the world like Barbados, visit Divi Southwinds for an unforgettable experience!
